I visit Zoo Chorzów in Katowice with a divided opinion. On one way Im against the idea of keeping wild animal under prison like conditions. On the other hand I understand need conversational and educational work that the zoo contribute to. So how was it?
My main reason to visit the Zoo Chorzów was that I was curios on the European Bisons. An animal that is so deeply connected to the European history and so rare today. The wild European bisons have been extinct, but are now back living in the wild. Even if the population is just a fragment of what it once was.
I’m impressed of how big they are. My husband reply when I sms:ed him a picture of them was, they looks like big cows. Of course he is right. Anything else would be strange, because that what it is.
This was my highlight of my visit of Zoo Chorzów. But there was more to see and I continued my walk. Even if the animal many time is the same at al Zoos there is always some differences. Here I become specially found in the monkeys.
Maybe because they are our closet relatives in the nature. Or I was just reminded of a young me climbing around in the tree back home. Another supercool animal that I always liked is the elephants. They are so big but also keen and have strong family values.
The last thing that made Zoo Chorzów great is that you don’t need a fantastic camera with a strong objective to get good pictures on most of the animals.
How to get to Zoo Chorzów
The easiest way to get to Zoo Chorzów is to take the bus out from Katowice center. We didn’t find a kiosk to buy the bus ticket at but was lucky finding a nice bus driver letting us go for free.
The entrance ticket is only 26 pln on high season and 13 pln during November – February making it a cheap and educational pleasure. If you are looking for a budget stay I would recommend IBIS Budget that is centrally located close to the Silesian museum.
