Batman Alleys is the place to be if you love mural paintings. Here you get good vibes and great coffee while you admire quality mural paintings.
Starting with a Batman painting in the 1980:s the area around Rua Gonçalo Afonso and Rua Medeiros de Albuquerque in the Vila Madalena neighborhood of São Paulo have become a real tourist spot. So when I was in Sao Paulo earlier this year I knew I need to get there. As you maybe know at this time I love to walk when I travel. So even if it was quite a walk from Mercure Alamedas where I stayed I just knew that I need to visit Batman Alley.
The walk to Batman Alley took me about one hour where I passed one of the biggest cemetery I ever seen. But when I finally got there it was worth it. Yes it’s touristic, but not on a bad way. There was not all this stands selling plastic fantastic. Instead there is local craftwork, cafeterias and a lot of mural painting to see.
Al of the Batman Alley feels safe and inclusive. There is sometimes queues or people passing by the mural painting you want to take a shot of. But in general people made sure that we al got the pictures we liked. The motives differs between the different murals. But of course Batman was a returning motive. But I also liked the queer inspired murals. Maybe because I know that Sao Paulo is Brazils most LGBT-friendly city.
As you can understand I do love Batman Alley. Its a destination in it self and well worth a visit. If you like to drive or use public transport instead of walk there like me, that will work good as well. If you want a special memory check out this photo tour in Batman Alley.
