Getting a ride on a dog sledge is a super fun experience. It starts al ready before the ride, when you see how excited the dogs are to run. They jump up and down barking of joy. Knowing that something fun are a head of them. And they are right.
Our tour started just below the Ice hotel in Jukasjärvi. On the ice of Torne Älv the driver and 12 dogs was waiting to give us a cold but fun experience. After been told to keep our feet’s forward at al time we got away. The sledge went quick and smooth over the ice. The only sound was the sledge contact with the snow and the dogs running over the ice.
As the sledge continued its way towards an outdoor fika, we enjoyed the speed and contact with nature. Our driver told us that the dog could pull the sledge up to the age of 9 years before they got retired. An impressing age, considering the weight of a sledge.
But maybe even more interesting was that a well trained dog pack can make the sledge go up to 30 kilometer an hour at short distance. While the more normal speed was around 15-20 km/hour. On the other hand many dog sledge races are up to 500 kilometers long, stretching out over several days.
Our tour was of course much shorter, but was an adventure anyway. Half way we stopped by a wind shelter for some fika of kanelbulle and coffee. Something that was well needed and tasted much better then our normal fika at the office.
How to book your dog sledge
We booked our dog sledge tour thru the Ice Hotels homepage. But you can also book this and longer tours at the Lapland Wilderness Tours own homepage. You will get an amazing experience where dogs, natures and humans becomes one for a short time. A dog sledge is an absolutely fun, inspiring and exciting experience. Go for it!
