Gdansk is located at Polands northern coast and is a true summer city. How ever it’s more then the closeness to the great beaches that makes it worth a visit. When I visited Gdansk in September I was surprised that there was so many tourist. But after some walks in the city I understand why. I will here give you my most visits inside Gdansk.
Westerplatte
Westerplatte was my main reason to visit the city and it didn’t disappoint me. To visit one of the starting points of world war 2 should be as important place to visit as a Auschwitz if we want to understand contemporary European history. It’s both a memorial over the heroes who defended their country as well as a great viewing point over Gdansk harbour.
At Westerplatte you can visit some ruins of bunkers and commander post as well as the monument to the defenders of the coast. On the way back to the ferry you can see one of the great beaches in Gdansk.
My only negative opinion about Westerplatte was that they sold toy weapons at a place where real soldiers died. That made me leave the place with a bad taste.
St Mary’s church in Gdansk
I love to visit churches. Not because Im super christian. But I do like the atmosphere and the beauty of the buildings. The St Mary’s church in Gdansk was not an exception. Its located in the city center and a great place to sit down and reflect over what you learned at Westerplatte. With something between 185- 190 000 cubic meter its one of the three largest brick churches in the world. It’s a church with a light interior and small chapels at the side.
One thing that makes this church special is that it have been working as both Catolic and Protestant church simultaneously. Something that can work as a reminder of the simple fact that there is only one God. Independent of what we call or how we praise him.
As I think that churches main purpose is to care about the poor and our souls I was specially that not al decorations was bling bling.
Gdansk rebuilt old town
Gdansk as many other Polish cities was totally destroyed during world war 2. But instead of creating a boring 1950-city Gdansk is rebuilt to it’s older glory. Big parts of the city center now looks like it did before the war. Even if the apartments behind the facade is modern. It’s a great place to visit early mornings before ot get to crowded by tourists. Then you can walk imagine you have made a time journey.
Walking around in silence, just waiting to see a horse and wagon coming around the corner gives you a feeling about what lives was before. If you prefer to walk a little later you will find your self in a busy tourist spot with a lot of restaurants. How ever in my personal opinion that takes a way some of the charm.
Where to stay in Gdansk
There is a lot hotels and apartment to choose between in Gdansk. Even if I like the idea of hotels breakfast I did try out Happy stay at my visit. But you can also choose to stay at one of the big global chains or a small independent hotel. Just make sure it have walking distance to the old city.
