Solo traveling is many times lonely adventures. Not only spend you a lot of time on airports where most other passengers are stressed and without any interest to have coffee with a stranger. Neither do you most of the time knows someone at the destination. But in our high tech society there is hope. This is the top five apps you need to find friends when you solo traveling
Meetup – free events to meet locals
Meetup is an amazing app and website when you solo traveling. Here you can find groups and events at your destination independent of your interests. When I look for my home town Malmö I found everything from AI to knitting. And the best of it, every event was free.
Worldpackers – volunteer as a solo traveler
But many who solo traveling also want to make a difference in the country the visit. This is where Worldpackers gets in to the picture. From here you can find the opportunity to find volunteer around the world. You can find volunteer places in a lot of different fields. One thing I like with Worldpackers as a solotraveler is that I can sign up so little as one week in some spaces. This is quit good, because you can contribute to the local society but not been forced to stop traveling.
Guruwalk – free city tours
But if you are solo traveling and short of time in a city but do want to get as much out of it as possible Guruwalk is your best option. This is a platform connecting guides with visitors on a pay what you want basis. This solotion makes it possible for you to get quality walks in the city and pay what you can afford. This ios a fantastic way to meet a local even if you cant afford the more expensive tours thru booking companies.
Couchsurfing – sleep at a local couch
Solo traveling is many time also budget traveling. And if you have some days in the city you maybe want to know the locals even better then Guruwalks makes possible. Then couchsurfing is the thing for you. Ge away with expensive hotel bills and sleep at a locals coach. It can’t get much more local living then that. Yes maybe it’s mot in the city center but you get to see end experience the life as a local. And that’s more then an hotel can give you.
This can sounds a little weird. But Instagram is a perfect tool to find friends who welcomes you as a solo traveler in their city. Many of my best travel experience have been made possible thru friends from instagram. A good thing here is that you can get the time to know each other before and see that your personal interests and chemistry fits before you meet. Its also a great way to keep in contact when you get home and maybe return their hospitality in the future.
Apps I avoid when I solo traveling
The five apps above is safe, well trusted and good for solo traveling. But there is a lot more apps and Im sure many of them are good. But I would never use apps like Tinder or GRINDR to get a good solo traveling experience. This apps do have their task to fill. But sadly there is to many people there who don’t know how to be polite and socialize. So avoid them and similar apps.
