Mercure Alamedas in Sao Paulo have a little mixed reviews when you goggle it. So with the idea of looking on the black swans in Ibirapuera park I decided to book it. This 4* hotel have a great location just 1,5 block away from Avenida Paulista. The busy business street in middle of Sao Paulista. With an early arriving I was not sure I would get a room direct. But I was hoping to be able to leave my luggage in the luggage room and start to explore the city.
Checking in
But even if I arrived to Mercure Alamedas as early as around 8 am I was told that I as a Gold member in Accors All program I was given a room. The staff spoke good english and there was not any communication problem at al. Something that you can’t take as granted in Sao Paulo. The reception is small and a little dark. This is sad because a good reception could work as a meeting point for single travelers who like to meet others. Even if this group maybe prefer to stay at a hostel and not a 4 * hotel.
The room
Deciding what rooms category you should choose is sometimes hard. Usually I prefer to stay one category over the lowest if there ain’t an executive room with lounge access as at Grand Mercure in Hanoi. But this time the room looked good and big so I stayed at a standard room. Maybe it helped that my stay was only for four nights.
The room was a big as it looked and with a balcony and dressing room it was almost as a mini suite. The internet was quick and easy to access. But the room would need to get some new furniture as well as a little better cleaning. Im not picky. But finding previous guests hair in the shower ain’t a wow experience.
I found a pool at Mercure Alamedas
One problem for budget travelers is that most budget hotels and hostels don’t have a pool. And the pool was one of the reasons to why I decided to stay at a little more expensive hotel. The pool at Mercure Alamedas was located on the roof and was to my surprise cold as f-uck. The good way to see it was that it was refreshing in the warm stone jungle of Sao Paulo. The view from the roof top pool was just stones, stones and more stones. But if you want to understand how big the city is and how little green areas there are, its a perfect viewing point. There is also some sun chairs to rest in while you get your magic Brazilian tan.
Breakfast is the fuel for the day
If there ain’t lounge access incuded in my room I always goes for an included breakfast. It’s not always the cheapest solution. But it’s so nice to get a great breakfast without the need to dress up. And I most say that the breakfast at Mercure Alamedas was great. It had al is should and more. Scrambled egg, fruits, fresh bread and strong coffee. I just loved it! The staff here was not as good on english as at the reception, but it was possible to made your self understood. They was also kind enough to save my headphones in a looked area when I forgot them one morning. So this time I was happy that my room fee had an included breakfast.
Was Mercure Alamedas worth the money?
Well I would say yes. If I would be a little more critical the need for some new furniture and a renovation of the bathroom would make it sink. But the room is big, the location is fantastic, the breakfast is good until dinner and the attention to me as a Gold member makes it worth the money. The last one specially makes the hotel stay out. I have never got an early check in at 8 am at any other hotel.
