Flying Lufthansa First Class should be a real pleasure. So why do I feel disappointed? Is the food or service so bad? Let me think back on my recent Lufthansa flight between Frankfurt and Sao Paulo. It al started good with a Porsche taking me to the jet bridge where I could look up at the Queen of the sky.
Boarding and seat
After taking an elevator up from ground floor we entered the plane thru door 1L. And as we know, a left turn after boarding is a good thing. The Lufthansa First Class cabin in a 747 is a little special with 8 seats configured along the walls and a couple seats in the middle. It almost looks like a Christmas tree. The cabin is old and Lufthansa will renew it during 2025. However I’m not sure there new suits will fit into the 747 due the curved walls.
As for now the Lufthansa First Class cabin feels to open compared to other airlines. For me luxury is the mix of uniqueness and service that most other people never experience. And with an open cabin a large part of the uniqueness get’s lost. On the good side, the chair is full flat and long enough to stretch out in.
When you board you are welcomed by the flight host and the steward, the captain pass by a few minutes later to greet us in person. As you know, a good lounge wear is existentially for a good sleep. So to make sure I would sleep well I told them that I would like one in large. . A few minutes later I changed my clothes and rested back.
What about the food experience at Lufthansa First Class
The food is usually the high light when you fly in Lufthansa First Class. As an example I got both caviar and lobster to starters. Something I would never spoil my self with at home. To main course I choose to have a Breast of a Guinea Fowl with Morel Sauce and Risotto. This dish was dry and did not deliver the level I expect in First Class. My choose of dessert was a chocolate tartlet. Once again, tasty but not that good that I would raise it to the sky. For breakfast I was more modest and stopped by some scrambled egg and fresh fruits.
Al in al, if it haven’t been for the caviar and lobster I would say the food was more Business Class then First Class.
The over all service then
When you fly Lufthansa First Class you should expect the highest service possible on a plane. Remember luxury is about the mix of uniqueness and service. Here I would say that Lufthansa fail. The service is not bad or slow. But it was not proactive or professional kind enough. As an example, when I fly with Swiss First Class the air host is passing by asking if they could do something for me frequently while I need to ask for it at Lufthansa. The only part of service I found really good was the turn down service. Transforming my seat to a lovely bed.
Sum it up
Lufthansa First Class is not bad, it’s not just good enough. With a hard competition for First Class passengers there is no mistakes to be done. For me, the main problem is that the service was to professional. It’s like everything is made on routine. The service miss the part of kindness and proactivity I have found on other airlines First Class cabins. Will I fly them again? Well if I can choose another First Class cabin I will for sure not choose Lufthansa.
