Flying environmental friendly sounds like a dream for us who love to travel. But if we are honest to our self, flying is bad for the environmental. When an average family look on their carbon emissions, flying is number six of top ten. We can speak about electrical flights. But it will take a long time before they gets common. So what can we do instead to fly environmental friendly?
Book direct flights
By flying direct flights you fly a more straight line without detours. Of course that also means less carbon emissions. Add to that that start and landing could stand for up to 25% of the airplanes fuel usage. So a direct flight goes quicker, more straight and have just one start off and landing. The bad side is that a direct flight want give you as many points as a detour would. So its not great if you are making a Milage run.
Fly with more environmental airlines and planes
Flying on airlines our routes with older airplane is in general less environmental friendly then flying with new planes. So when you plan to fly environmental friendly make sure you know your airplane. Is it a new A320 Neo or some old outdated B737 Classic? What plane you fly will have a drastic difference on your carbon emission.
Flying light is to fly environmental friendly
Luggage weight is an enemy to the environment. Every kilo you pack will increase the carbon mission. On the other hand, every kilo you reduce will save carbon mission. So is al your luggage really necessary? If al passengers succeeded to reduce their luggage with one kilo on every flight for one year, the fuel savings are sufficient to fly 20 times from Helsinki to Tokyo. So to fly with hand luggage only don’t just get you quicker thru the custom. It also safe fuel and decrease carbon emissions.
Flying environmental friendly = fly paperless
I know you are a modern traveler, having al your boarding passes in your phone. It’s not just more easy, it also help you to fly more environmental friendly. But you would be surprised how many people who actually ask to get their boarding pass printed. It’s stupid I know! I just do it when I fly Lufthansa First Class because the envelope that follow is such a great souvenir.
Offset your carbon emission
Most airlines today offer you to either buy a little more for biofuel or carbon offset. In the later you pay a little more to found projects that reduce greenhouse gases. Examples could be planting trees and rightly done, this could also support local communities in developing countries. So by paying a little more you will be flying more environmental friendly
To fly environmental friendly
is maybe still not possible. But you can make a difference. By flying nonstop in new airplanes with light luggage and with a carbon emission offset you will make a difference! The choice is yours!
