Summer airport failure seems to be more and more an annual tradition. The air industry hits one of its most busy times during summer when most people want to take a well deserved break. And yes it well deserved! I really want the cleaner, industrial worker or office clerk to get a good time away. But a big part of a great vacation starts on the airport. An airport failure can destroy the most wonderful vacation.
Late gate change, delayed flights and lost luggage is just some of the things that can go wrong at the airport. And even if you can get some compensation in some cases it don´t take a way the feeling of an airport failure. Last summer it went so bad that Heathrow Airport in London asked the airlines to reduce their ticket sale. The big question is if it have become better this year? If Helsinki airport in Finland is one of the best with 18% flights that are canceled or delayed more the 15 minutes we travelers seems to get a summer of airport failures again.

Airports who creates less failures
I would love to make a counter list showing airports who makes sure that their passengers gets a smooth start of their vacation. But when the top 10 list shows airports with a disrupted rate between 18 and 34 % I´m not as happy as I should be. It looks like even a good airport creates and certain level of airport failures.

Dusseldorf International Airport (DUS)
22.26% of flights disrupted
Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL)

Plan your trip
So if you are one of those who still haven´t bought your flight ticket, take some extra time to find an route or destination that decreases your risk to an airport failure The smartest way seems to do this by flying direct flights form smaller airports of possible. One of the advantages of this is that you probably will find low cost carriers as well. The other way to at least get a smoother service when the airport failure have hit you is to have a frequent flyer status or business class tickets. Its really when the shit hit the fan that business class is worth the extra money.
