Flying is broken, specially if you fly in coach. But there is a solution that don’t demands higher prices. So lets check in to it.
My last three flights have been delayed 30 min or more, my husbands luggage was delayed 3 days in September and crew speaks against them self. Meanwhile you are standing in queues, sitting confused waiting for a clear answer or ask your friend to borrow you some clothes. Do you recognize your self? Yes I thought so! And the reason is that flying is broken. Don’t miss understand me, I love flying. But I would like it to be a little more human.
In both EU and USA airlines have decided to compete with the price as Washington Post writes about. And we as customers is following the trail with a happy smile even when we know that flying is broken. The best proof of this is the financial results of RyanAir. But we don’t need to accept plastic seats and lottery sale in the air. This is al result of a deregulated industry. For many years the price in US was fixed. The airlines needed to compete with service. Not the price.
I would seriously see that the EU went to a future where the price on an airline ticket would cost me the same independent of when I buy it. Because the market aint working today, but it’s we as customers that is the looser. Because the airlines just rice the prices with 30%. And even if EU:s transport commissioner Adina Vălean asks for an explanation she thinks the airline market is working properly. But it ain’t, flying is broken.
Flying don’t need to be broken
It’s time to make sure that flying wont continue to be a health risk. My suggestion is that the EU Commission put a fixed price per flied mile and then lets the airline compete with better service. Sone the plastic chairs would be gone, a glas of water wan’t cost you 2 euros and your luggage would arrive in time and the crew can get a decent salary. Because when flying is broken it’s because the free market don’t work.
What I know the airliners are not working on a free market. Flying is and should be highly regulated. So to put a fixed price per mile inside EU is not to regulate a free market. Its to re-regulate the market so service and quality gets more important then price. I love traveling but I hate that flying is broken. We as passengers deserves something better. Specially when it was we that saved the airlines during covid.
