How do you dress right for your flight? Can I dress up normal or do need to be a little more aware of fashion? I have spent hour after hour on different airports and been flying everything from low cost to First class. And while Im waiting for my flight I usually looks on how people dress to guess where they are going. But have I seen any signs or difference between classes, destinations and airlines?
Between destinations yes! There is a lot more shorts on a flight to Mallorca then to Kiruna by logical reasons. By airline well maybe, but mostly between charter and regular flights, where the former usually have a more relaxed dress code. And this is tight connected the pattern of destinations. The interesting part comes when when we look on the dress between classes onboard the flight.
For even if there is no formal dress code it looks like a lot of people think so. Specially when I read al this posts and article about the importance to dress right to increase your possibilities to upgrades. But to be honest, for an upgrade your outfit makes no difference. The airline goes for things like status in their customer program, ticket class (not the same as service class) and how many you are in the booking. As long as you don’t look like a drifter they don’t care.
Dressing after class
But many people think the do and dress up hoping to get upgraded. As a consequence I have seen a lot of branded clothes walking by the business class cabin without upgrades. Then they will sit down on row 21 and look stupid beside a guy in training pants and a sweater. On the other hand people who actually is traveling in business class is dressed in everything between suit and shorts with denim in between. Here we maybe wont find training pants. But I can ensure you that al other kind of clothes are there. The golden rule to dress right here is to think about who paid for your ticket and how are you traveling with.
When I fly to a warmer country in Business class I usually fly in either shorts or my favorite leather tracksuits pants and a t-shirt. On the other hand I would fly in wool pants and shirt if I was flying for work. The difference between whats right is that on vacation I just represent my self but on a work trip I also represent the company. And this makes a difference when it comes whats the right way to dress.
When I fly First class I don’t care what I wear as long as its clean and dosen’t show to much skin. The reason here is simple. As long as I get on the flight I will change to the airlines lounge wear and thats whats right to wear onboard that flight. But my general impressions after I have checked people out in First class lounges is that it’s the most relaxed passenger there. I have seen everything from training pants to jeans and pike. The only thing I never seen in First class isa suit!
So what is the right dress then
Well, this is easy to answer! The right dress is what you feel comfortable, is clean and don’t offend others. But I would avoid tight jeans because it gets uncomfortable after some hours as well as a suit because it will wrinkle to much. Otherwise, dress like you do at home or work. Almost al other passenger will not care about you anyway. And those who do is just jellos because they think you looks better then them.
If you like you can dress up a little more edgy then usual. Not because its necessary, but because its fun. I remember a flight I took in leather kilt and 10 hole boats and got compliment of the air host. So dress comfortable and enjoy your flight. Thats how you dress right, comfortable with a smile. So when I start my Milage run tomorrow I will do it in full leather and a happy face. And of course you will be able to follow me at my Instagram account.
